Songs for the Days on the Calendar
Two occasions where everybody is buying the same thing at the same time. That is exactly why anything personal lands harder here than at a birthday — and why it has to be organised earlier than feels necessary.

Everybody is doing the same thing on the same day
These two occasions concentrate an enormous amount of identical sentiment into one Sunday. The flowers, the cards and the brunches are largely interchangeable, which is unfortunate for the shops and useful for you: almost anything specific stands out by contrast in a way it would not on a birthday.
Plan two weeks early. A gift that arrives on the Friday before, with nothing else competing for attention, gets a different reaction from the same gift handed over during a lunch where four other people are also giving things. This is the single most useful piece of advice about either day and it costs nothing.
Both days are difficult for a substantial number of people — bereavement, estrangement, infertility, a lost child. If you are programming music for a room, a service or a shop, at least one person present is in one of those categories, and the individual pages here say what to do about it.
And if the person you are buying for genuinely wants nothing, that is usually true and usually means they want evidence of attention rather than an object. That is the whole reason a song does well on these two days in particular.
How it works
Three steps. The first one is the only hard part.
- 1Tell the storyFive questions. Who it’s for, the occasion, three details only you two know, the feeling you want, and the names that have to be in it.
- 2Pick the soundCountry, pop, acoustic, R&B, gospel or rock. A man’s voice or a woman’s.
- 3Listen, then unlockA 30-second preview in about two minutes. Pay only if you love it. You get the full song, the lyrics, and a page you can send.
Common questions
- When should I organise a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift?
- Two weeks early, and give it on the Friday before rather than on the day. Nothing else is competing for attention then, and the reaction is completely different from the same gift handed over during a busy lunch.
- What do you give someone who says they want nothing?
- Evidence of attention rather than an object. That is usually what "nothing" means, and it is the reason something made for the specific person does unusually well on these two days.
- Why are these lists split from the birthday ones?
- Because they are different occasions. A Mother’s Day song thanks her for the role; a birthday song celebrates the person who existed before it. Conflating the two is the commonest mistake with both.
