Milestone Birthday Songs
Thirty-four songs for a milestone birthday, sorted by the decade. A thirtieth is largely a joke about being old; a sixtieth is a room full of people who have known each other forty years. The same record will not do both.

Ten for any big number
- Forever YoungRod Stewart · 1988
A blessing rather than a birthday song, which is what a milestone actually wants.
- My WayFrank Sinatra · 1969
For someone stubborn who turned out to have been right about some of it. Late in the evening.
- LandslideFleetwood Mac · 1975
About being frightened of getting older. Only if they raised it first — otherwise it reads as pointed.
- ViennaBilly Joel · 1977
Slow down, you have time. As useful at fifty as at nineteen and far less often said.
- The BestTina Turner · 1989
Unsubtle and completely sincere. Say their name over the intro and let the room join in.
- Old ManNeil Young · 1972
For anybody being dramatic about a number. Deniable, because it is a great song.
- Young at HeartFrank Sinatra · 1953
Says the thing you were going to put in the toast, and says it better.
- I’m Still StandingElton John · 1983
For a decade that was difficult. About having got through rather than about having arrived.
- Both Sides NowJoni Mitchell · 1969
About looking at the same life from two ages. Her 2000 recording for a room of adults.
- Sweet CarolineNeil Diamond · 1969
The last song, at every milestone, in every country. Nobody has to be told the shouted part.
Find out how they feel about the number
Milestone birthdays divide people sharply and the division is not by age. Some are delighted, throw a party and want jokes about being ancient. Others have been quietly dreading it for months and would rather it were a Tuesday. Playing “Old Man” to the second sort in front of forty people is a long evening, and it is easy to find out which you are dealing with by asking one person who knows.
Match the music to their decade, not to the current one. The reliable move at any milestone is to build the playlist around what was on the radio when they were between sixteen and twenty-two, which for a fiftieth in 2026 means roughly 1992 to 1998. People remember that music with a specificity they do not have for anything since.
One sentimental song, once, and early. A milestone party will take one moment of sincerity and will not take two. Put it with the toast, before the room gets loud, and then go back to the party. Two sentimental songs in a row kills the evening and it does not recover.
The slideshow problem at a milestone is the opposite of a graduation: there are too many photographs and most of them are bad. Pick fifty, weight them towards the last decade so people recognise each other, and choose a song under four minutes.
By the decade
Thirtieth
Mostly a joke about being old, from people who are not. Lean into it — the sincerity comes later in life.
- 22Taylor Swift · 2012
Eight years out and played at every thirtieth anyway, entirely as a joke.
- Old ManNeil Young · 1972
The standard thirtieth joke. Deniable, because it is genuinely a great record.
- Mr. BrightsideThe Killers · 2003
Anyone turning thirty now was seven when it came out and will scream every word.
- Party in the U.S.A.Miley Cyrus · 2009
Exactly the right nostalgia window for this decade. It will empty the seats.
- Don’t Stop Me NowQueen · 1978
Relentlessly alive. Good for the point where everyone decides to enjoy themselves.
- Time of Your LifeGreen Day · 1997
For the end of the night, when somebody gets sentimental about their twenties.
- ViennaBilly Joel · 1977
The one genuinely useful song at a thirtieth. Most people at that age feel behind.
- Sweet CarolineNeil Diamond · 1969
The last song. It has been closing thirtieths since before anybody at this one was born.
Fortieth and fiftieth
The decades where people mind most. Build round their own twenties and keep the jokes affectionate.
- The BestTina Turner · 1989
Unsubtle and sincere, and precisely the right vintage for a fiftieth in 2026.
- I Wanna Dance with SomebodyWhitney Houston · 1987
A whole generation has a specific memory attached. It will fill a floor immediately.
- Freedom! ’90George Michael · 1990
For someone who has just left a job, a marriage or a city. Play the single edit.
- WonderwallOasis · 1995
For a fortieth in a British room. Somebody will produce a guitar and it cannot be stopped.
- LandslideFleetwood Mac · 1975
The sentimental one. Once, early, with the toast, and then back to the party.
- I’m Still StandingElton John · 1983
For a decade that was genuinely difficult. About having got through it.
- Bittersweet SymphonyThe Verve · 1997
Grand and slightly rueful, which is the accurate emotional register for a fortieth.
- Dancing QueenABBA · 1976
It works at every age and every decade. If the mix is uncertain, start here.
Sixtieth and beyond
A room of people who have known each other forty years. Warmer, and the jokes can stop.
- Young at HeartFrank Sinatra · 1953
Says the whole toast in three minutes. The best choice on this page for a sixtieth.
- What a Wonderful WorldLouis Armstrong · 1967
Two minutes, ends properly, and nobody in the room will object.
- My WayFrank Sinatra · 1969
For a stubborn life, late in the evening, with everyone joining in badly.
- When I’m Sixty-FourThe Beatles · 1967
Funny until it is accurate, and then better. Save it for the actual sixty-fourth.
- Both Sides NowJoni Mitchell · 1969
About seeing the same life from two ages. Her 2000 recording is the one for this room.
- UnforgettableNat King Cole · 1951
Warm and unhurried, and it lets the party stay a conversation rather than a dance.
- Forever YoungBob Dylan · 1974
A blessing over a room with grandchildren in it. The right way to end a toast.
- Twist and ShoutThe Beatles · 1963
For a room spanning eighty years of age. Two and a half minutes and everybody is up.

What a song for a milestone sounds like
We wrote these from made-up answers to the same five questions you would fill in. They are not customer work. A milestone birthday is one of the few occasions where a room will genuinely stop and listen, and a song about the person rather than about the number is the best possible use of it.

How it works
Three steps. The first one is the only hard part.
- 1Tell the storyFive questions. Who it’s for, the occasion, three details only you two know, the feeling you want, and the names that have to be in it.
- 2Pick the soundCountry, pop, acoustic, R&B, gospel or rock. A man’s voice or a woman’s.
- 3Listen, then unlockA 30-second preview in about two minutes. Pay only if you love it. You get the full song, the lyrics, and a page you can send.
Common questions
- What songs should play at a 40th or 50th birthday?
- Build the playlist round what was on the radio when they were between sixteen and twenty-two. For a fiftieth in 2026 that is roughly 1992 to 1998. People remember that music with a specificity they have for nothing since.
- Is “Old Man” or “Landslide” a good joke for a milestone?
- Only if they are enjoying the birthday. Plenty of people have been quietly dreading it for months, and a joke about age in front of forty guests makes for a long evening. Ask somebody who knows first.
- How many sentimental songs should there be?
- One, early, with the toast. A milestone party will take one moment of sincerity and will not take two — the second kills the room and it does not recover.
- What about the slideshow?
- Pick about fifty photographs, weight them towards the last decade so people recognise each other, and choose a song under four minutes. The problem at a milestone is too many pictures, not too few.
- Can I get a song written for a milestone birthday?
- Yes. Answer five questions about them — the number, three things only your family or their friends know, the feeling you want and the music they like — and you will hear a 30-second preview in about two minutes. The full song is $19.
